Andrew Beckett, a brilliant and ambitious young lawyer, has just been fired from Wyant, Wheeler because he has AIDS. He goes to see Mr McDermott, a lawyer; to ask for help.

Mr McDermott was a , large man who had worked very hard to overcome his Irish-immigrant background

his office was elegantly decorated, Abstract Expressionist paintings hung on the walls,

and he was dressed immaculately, with a proper half inch of starched, snow-white cuffs showing beneath the sleeves of his custom-made dark blue suit

He knew Andrew by reputation, and he greeted him effusively

he assumed that Andrew wanted to talk to him about leaving Wyant, Wheeler for an early partnership with his firm, and it was something he was willing to consider seriously.
